When it comes to a couple of my favourite films, then you can’t beat James Bond and a gangster film called Layer Cake! My idea was to create a showreel that brings these two film styles together as I believe that it was Daniel Craig’s James Bond impression in Layer Cake that got him the role as 007! For me, one of the standout scenes in Layer Cake is the cafe fight that takes place, as it is filmed from the perspective of one of the characters. This makes the audience feel more involved in the action.
I kept the set design simple with a rice paper wall to allow me to film the silhouette of Bond approaching his target. I utilised the surroundings to eradicate the need for much in the way of set. I used the black studio curtains to bring darkness to the set and lit the scene by diffusing light by bouncing it off the studio wall. The props used were a gun, chair and rope. I researched Bond’s weapon of choice, the Walther PPK and found a local 3D printing enthusiast who agreed to print it for me in resin on a 1:1 scale. I sprayed the final piece in matt black with an airbrush.
When it came to directing the scene, it was important to give the audience different perspectives, filming head height as if a spectator standing in the room and low to simulate being a character in the fight from a face on angle. I filmed the Bond Girl in a way that doesn’t show her complete form, it was important to me to show a classic Bond-like style shot without the male gaze; I’m showing her vulnerability through shots of the props rather than her body. A long dress with a high neckline also helps make her sophisticated rather than an object to look at. The shot of her escaping the ropes by herself gives her independence instead of relying on the secret agent for her freedom.
And here's the film, enjoy:
